In-Person Consult injectables 48-hour aftercare guide at a Boulder injectability clinic

The single most important rule after injectables is simple: don’t rub, massage, or press on the treated areas for the first 48 hours unless I specifically tell you to. That one habit prevents a lot of avoidable swelling, bruising, and “why does this look uneven today?” stress. I run In-Person Consult INJECTABLES as a 35-minute, on-site evaluation for neurotoxins like botox and dermal fillers, including lip filler, so I can assess muscle movement and volume needs in real time. And because I’m in Boulder, I also plan your aftercare around our dry air, high sun, and active lifestyle.

0 to 48 Hours After Injectables: the do’s and don’ts that prevent bruising

First 0 to 2 hours

  • Keep your hands off the area. No rubbing, no “checking” it in the mirror with pressure.
  • Use a gentle cold compress if you’re puffy. Think light contact, short intervals, and never aggressive icing.
  • Stay upright when you can. If you’re heading back to work or class near the university, that’s usually easy.

First 24 to 48 hours

This is the window where most bruising decisions get made. I generally recommend you avoid:

Strenuous exercise and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours. If you’re a hiker, biker, or you have an outdoor class planned, swap it for a gentle walk.

Alcohol the same day, and ideally for 24 hours. It tends to increase flushing and bruising.

NSAIDs (like ibuprofen/naproxen) for 24 to 48 hours unless your prescribing doctor has you on them for a reason. If you need something for discomfort, acetaminophen is usually the go-to.

Boulder-specific tip: Our dry air can make you feel “fine” even when you’re dehydrated. Hydrate well, especially if you’re tempted by a long walk on the trails. If you’re already planning to stop by an iv hydration bar, keep it gentle and skip anything that warms you up or spikes circulation in the first 24 hours.

If you’re commuting in from Louisville, Lafayette, Superior, Longmont, or Denver via US-36, build your appointment day like a recovery day. People around South Boulder’s Broadway corridor often schedule early-morning or evening so they can rest and avoid midday heat.

Days 3 to 7: when Boulder sun and heat start messing with your plan

By day three, most people feel ready to get back to normal. That’s great, but this is where the small stuff matters, especially in Boulder’s high-sun climate.

  • Keep avoiding heat spikes if you’re still swollen or bruised. Saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms, and very hot showers can make bruising look worse.
  • Skip facial massage tools and aggressive skincare gadgets over the treated area. That includes “just a quick gua sha.”
  • If you had lip filler or a botox flip lip discussion in your consult, be extra mindful about pressure. No hard kissing, no squeezing, and go easy with straws for the first day or two if you’re tender.
  • If you’re outdoors, wear a hat and keep the area protected. Sun exposure can make redness linger.

If you’re also doing other services

A lot of my regulars pair injectables planning with skincare. If you’re doing facials near me searches and you end up mixing in treatments like microneedling, co2 laser resurfacing, or even a relaxing facial spa day, ask me about spacing. I’ll keep the calendar realistic so your skin can actually recover and look good, not just feel busy.

Makeup, skincare, and bruising help: what I’m okay with in the first 48 hours

For most injectable appointment days, I like you to keep things clean and calm. If you’re asking “can I cover this up?” I get it. Here’s my general rule set, and I’ll adjust it if your injection sites are more sensitive.

Makeup timing

I generally recommend waiting until the next day to apply makeup directly over injection points. If you do apply makeup sooner, keep it light, use clean tools, and don’t press hard. If you had multiple injection points or you’re prone to irritation, waiting is usually the better move.

Ice and arnica

Gentle cold compresses can help with swelling right away. Arnica is a popular option for bruising support, and many people tolerate it well. If you’ve never used it, keep it simple and patch-test first. And remember, the big bruising triggers are still alcohol, heat, heavy workouts, and NSAIDs.

When to text or call me: normal swelling vs. “this doesn’t feel right”

A little swelling, mild tenderness, and small bruises can be normal after botox or dermal fillers, including juvederm lip filler. What I don’t want is for you to sit at home wondering if you’re overreacting. If you’re concerned, I’d rather you reach out.

Usually normal: mild swelling that improves day by day, small bruises, a “tight” feeling, or little bumps that soften as swelling settles.

Reach out to us: increasing pain, spreading redness or warmth, fever, drainage, or sudden changes that worry you. If you ever feel like it’s urgent, call emergency services first, then let us know as soon as you can.

“Julie listened to all my concerns, laid out a treatment option and was just overall super professional and helpful.”

one of our long-time clients

If you’re still deciding on a med spa near me in Boulder, this is the difference I care about. I’m not here for one appointment. I’m here for the follow-up questions, the check-ins, and the long game with your skin, including plans that might involve sculptra, lip filler, botox, or even pairing injectables with skincare sessions over time.

Quick FAQ: the 5 questions I hear most after botox and filler

How long should I avoid exercise after an In-Person Consult INJECTABLES?

I generally recommend skipping strenuous exercise and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours after injectables. Light walking is usually fine. If you’re training hard, doing hot yoga, or planning a big Boulder hike, give your body a full 48 hours so swelling and bruising can calm down.

Can I drink alcohol the same day as an In-Person Consult INJECTABLES?

I recommend you avoid alcohol the same day, and ideally for 24 hours. Alcohol can increase flushing and bruising. If you have an event downtown, consider planning injectables at least a couple of days ahead.

When can I put makeup on the treated area after injectables?

Most of the time, waiting until the next day is the safest move, especially if you have visible injection points. If you apply makeup sooner, keep it clean, light, and avoid pressing or rubbing the area.

Will ice or arnica help reduce bruising and swelling after injectables?

Gentle cold compresses can help with swelling in the first few hours. Arnica is commonly used to support bruising recovery, and many people like it. The biggest impact still comes from avoiding alcohol, heavy workouts, heat, and NSAIDs for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Can I go hiking, to hot yoga, or a sauna within 48 hours of injectables?

I recommend you wait 48 hours for hiking that makes you sweat heavily, and I recommend skipping hot yoga and saunas for the full 48 hours. Heat and intense exertion can increase swelling and make bruising more noticeable, which is the opposite of what you want right after treatment.
